The Austin Ukrainian community is collecting medical supplies to help emergency medical personnel in the front lines of the Russian invasion in Ukraine.

Facebook group members of Austin Ukrainians organized the medical aid drive. Organizers partnered with Ukrainian San Antonio, a nonprofit organization, to deliver the supplies first to Poland and then to medical personnel in Ukraine, Polina Shavaroba, told the American-Statesman.

Items will be collected during business hours at The House (formerly Russian House) restaurant in Austin and at Sharks Burger restaurant in Leander, she said.

"The whole Ukraine is one big family now. So our hearts bleed with pain for all our people whose cities are under siege and who have no ways to safely evacuate," Shavaroba, whose family and friends are currently sheltered in Kyiv and in rural central Ukraine, said. "We are planning to keep the drive ongoing after we ship the first batch."

At least 2.8 million Ukrainians have fled the country, the U.N. refugee agency told USA Today. More than 1.7 million of them exited through Poland.

As of Sunday, at least 103 children have died and hundreds more have been injured since the Russian invasion began last month, Ukrainian Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova told USA Today.

Rallies and protests against the war in Ukraine have been held daily and weekly throughout the city, organized by members and supporters of the Austin Ukrainian community.
